Byzantine Chain Maille Tutorial

The Byzantine Chain Maille pattern is highly decorative, easy to learn and is often used in jewellery making for creating Bracelets, necklaces and drop earrings. Follow this quick tutorial to get you started!

Materials you will need

2 pairs flat nose/chain nose Pliers (or one of each)
Artistic Wire 18 gauge 3.97mm Chain Maille Rings (You can use larger rings if this makes things easier for you to begin with)
A length of fine wire or tie to make it easier to grip
A little patience....:D

Step 1

Begin by looping your fine wire/tie around two closed rings. Twist to hold in place.

Step 2

Twist open 2 more rings using both pairs of pliers. Hook them through the first 2 rings then twist closed.

Step 3

Twist open another two rings, hook through the second pair of rings and twist closed. Make sure you close them as flush as you can to prevent snagging on your finished project.

Step 4

Now take the third pair you just attached and angle them backwards.....

Step 5

Open two more rings with your pliers and set to one side for a moment. Gently pull apart the two rings that are now at the front. It helps to keep them open by pinching hold of the rings you angled backwards. Then hook the 2 rings you just opened though the rings in between the opening. See image below...

Step 6

Open 2 more rings and hook through the last set of rings you just attached....

Step 7

Then open 2 more rings and attach to the last two. You are now repeating the previous pattern and will carry on like this until you reach your desired length.

Step 8

So angle back the last pair of rings like you did previously....

Step 9

Pinch those together again whilst you pull apart the two rings ow at the front, then attach another pair of rings through the center rings.

Step 10

Now carry on with the pattern until you reach the length of chain you desire.
