Guide to Beading Threads

17/10/2017 0 Comment(s) Introduction to Beading for beginners,

Hello!

So for this post I'd thought I would look through some of the most important components of a jewellers and crafters collection - the beading thread!

For a beginner beader, like myself for example, the difference in threads may be the last thing to think about but threads can change the look, finish and even character of your creations. I've looked on hundreds of websites for threads to assist in this Blog, and I've come across hundreds of "the best thread you can buys", "look no furthers" etc without really explaining the pros and cons of each- not everyone wants the same finishes and look to their ideas.

So here is (hopefully!) a helpful guide to assist in finding the best thread for you. This blog will go through the basics of the threads from beginner threads to start your interest and practise to professional level threads in order to find the right thread the job. The blog will give some explanation on their strengths and usability in crafting, some special characteristics of some - if they are pre-waxed or elasticated etc - and even some of the disadvantages to some threads for an unbiased but factual post

All the threads that I will be speaking about are all found on the BeadsJar website so take a look if you'd like some more information!

Before Choosing your Thread

Before deciding on what thread you want to use for your design, you need to think of some factors which may affect the drop or finishing of the necklace, pendant or other pieces. Firstly, the beads themselves. Are you thinking of using a smaller lighter seed bead like TOHO treasures or Miyuki? Or wanting a "heavier" items for your design such a a bone pendant or semi precious stone? The bead size affects the thread over a period of time - using a heavy pendant on a elasticated cord many severely stretch it and cause the pendant to disappear under clothing or drop lower then intended. Also the threading hole of the bead, is the threading hole small or large? Some beads like Superduos or Infinity beads also have a double threading holes so you need to make allowances for the thread to interweave between each other.

If you unsure of what beads might be best for you you can find links to Seed beads here and Glass Beads here if you'd like a run down with our designer Billie on the differences between them and what suits what projects.

Found your beads? Good, now next is the stringing material in order to get your chosen beads all together. For an idea of thread sizes (which need to match the size of the bead hole) here you can find a scale from the thinnest material to the thickest with all the threads available at Beads Jar:-

Currently available threads via BeadsJar from thinnest to thickest thread - Please note that these sizes are the smallest - The threads have other additional thicker sizes.

Never fear if your not sure what they mean! Here is my breakdown guide on advantages of threads, where to begin and what might be suitable for the work you are looking to do. Feel free at the end to comment your experience with the threads and what you found would be best for others! Or comment on our Facebook page or Twitter for some social discussions with others!

Threads for Beginners

Here is a small selection of threads that would be perfect for beginners to learn and practice before progressing to "harder" threads.

Elastic Cords

Stretch Magic Clear Elastic Cord 0.7mm 100 Metre Spool

Exactly as the name implies, elastic cords are created from elastic to give its stretch and ability to be manipulated easily - perfect for a beginner as it allows you to freely play around with the Shape and drop of necklaces and earrings. Its advantage for the novice beader is in it's ability to be easily threaded and knot without the need of additional Clasps or Findings. My own experience of the cord has been nothing but positive - I found it easy to cut and shape into my desired length and threading was effortless (despite my butterfingers!) and I was able to easily make a simple necklace with just a few items. The cost of the cord is relatively inexpensive at smaller lengths, meaning that practicing with the thread and messing up isn't a huge loss compared to more expensive materials.

The only word of warning I would recommend is that with anything elasticated, after a long period of time of stretching the thread you may find it slightly slacker then first created. For necklaces its not so much a problem, but for items like Bracelets you may find it slightly looser. To fix this you could easily trim the excess stretched material, retie and wear again!

Nymo Thread

Nymo Size D Nylon Bead Weaving Thread - Red 64yd

This is the perfect thread to learn weaving, as it's non twisted, pre-waxed nylon creates a smooth and durable thread for jewellers. Nymo thread has similar properties to the elastic cord such as a strong, woven creation means that it's sturdy for any project wether on loom weaving or if you want to try using the thread for the creation of some amazing pieces. The thread is remarkably thin compared to other beading materials meaning its perfect for beginners practice to learn and master threading. (Beware though, because of it's thin thread you may find yourself knotted a few occasions so until you master make sure to take some extra care!) Nymo almost reminds me of the cotton thread that you would use for sewing and embroidery, where the threading can be straight-forward once you know your own way of doing it - every one is different!

Toho G-Beading Thread

Toho One-G 0.2mm Nylon Beading Thread Blue 50yd Spool

One of the favourites for a jewellers perfect thread, TOHO G-Beading (Also referred to as TOHO One G) is an extremely strong but almost elasticated string which is perfect for structural beading work and weaving. Slightly pricer then the previous two, this thread is the perfect thread to master for beginners before moving onto more elaborate threads. TOHO G-Thread comes on smaller spools, perfect for practice, with some high quality string created by the same company of TOHO treasures and other seed beads. With its anti-fraying twisted monocord, TOHO G-Beading is easier to thread due to it's finer size and weave with the additional benefit of being pre-waxed to allow easy threading through Needles and beads. (Note for beginners: You will find that pre-waxed threads will be easier to thread if you aren't an expert at it - however once you get used to the materials and the way they function you can branch out into others.)

This thread is mainly used for peyote and herringbone stitching, some embroidery projects and other bead weaving. These also larger spools for the economy conscious and ideal for larger scope projects. One thing to note about the TOHO thread is the longer the length of thread the possibility of fraying - so get practice in first before going towards more difficult or intricate designs and weaves

Other Beading Threads

Beadsmith Metallic Polyester Thread

Beadsmith Metallic Polyester Thread 2 ply Silver 25 yards

A two-ply polyester core is encased by metallic thread, this Beadsmith MP Thread adds a beautiful Colour and sparkle for designs where you want to see some of the thread show through. The metallic thread  is perfect for threading Kumihimo beads, macrame, knotting, weaving, beading and bead knitting. The shine of the thread could also be used for embellishments or other projects or entwining it with other beading threads. Warning to newcomers of this thread as, because of the texture of the thread itself, you may find that it may stick to itself and slightly tangle, but it's an easy fix to do incase it does happen, but allows you the experience to prevent severe tangles in the future.

Beadalon Tassel Cords

Beadalon Cotton Tassel Cord Metallic Silver on Pink 20m

This cords are slightly different from threads as Beadalon threads are specifically made for creating custom length tassels for your projects. You can hand create these tassels yourself through numerous tutorials found across the internet or for a easier method you can use a tassel machine to create some fun and unique flair to your designs (which can be found on our site). These are especially perfect for earrings and necklaces to create a chic and modern set perfect for gifts or a personal project. However the Beadalon cord is preferably used just for creation of tassels, as the stringed material isn't as strong or durable to hold beads or designs and meant mainly for decorative purposes.

Chinese Knot

Purple Nylon Chinese Knotting Cord 0.8mm 15m Length

These vividly coloured cords are slightly thicker then other variations but that adds to their usability as they are easy to grip and thread with and are ideal for heavier set beads or pieces with larger threading holes. The nylon cords are rounded rather then traditionally twisted meaning they have a beautifully smooth edge, idea for macrame and creating Shamballa style bracelets. For necklaces and pendants, the cord is tactile to create sliding knots - a knot which allows the wearer to extend the length or shorten depending on their preference or drop. Sliding knots are perfect for male jewellery - they have no definite end to them looking like a single piece - but also the thicker cord comes in a variety of colours from natural browns and stone colours to brighter blues, reds and greens meaning that finding the right colour is simple.

Cotton Threads

Waxed Cotton Cords 1mm Brown/Cream And White Mix 10m

Used extensively in jewellery making due as a natural alternative to synthetic nylon, cotton threads are similar to the Chinese Knot material in look and use. They are extremely easy to grip when beading and its natural tight weave means it's perfect for the jeweller who wants to make some longer lasting pieces. Cotton, as it a natural material, is a perfect match for natural pendants and beads such as shell, bones and even semi-precious stones like moonstone, lapis, amethyst and many more. Cotton cord, after a long period of time, can shrink slightly due it's natural material, meaning any gaps between beads or the findings maybe slightly tighter then first created.

Here is a design created on our YouTube channel which uses cotton thread and pearls to create a stunning Cotton Pearl Infinity Necklace here for some cotton inspiration!

Fireline

Fireline Braided Bead Thread Crystal 10LB 125yd 0.008"

Another popular thread in the jewellery community, Fireline has also been used for fisherman for their lines due to its superior strength and inability to be pieced (unless under a great force). Fireline is know for its distinctly strong braided synthetic thread, from gel spun polyethylene to create a fine thread.  This thread is made to be a supporting feature to your creations - there is little colour choice or shine to the thread - but don't let it deter you! The thread is perfect for on loom or even off loom weaving and is a great alternative to Nymo threads for sharper edged beads like Miyuki Delicas, Swarovski Crystals, cut glass and natural gemstones as its natural dexterity and proficiency allow this to create high-class but resilient pieces.

I have found this thread to, personally, be one of my preferred materials as it doesn't require any additional stretching or preconditioning before using and (because I'm a person who tends to do things wrong the first time!) painless to unknot. The only issue the beginner beader may have with this thread is it difficult to cut to size and more expensive then elastic cord or others so you may need to invest in some tools to ensure your cuts are quick and incorrect knots easy to solve.

Hemp

Beadsmith Natural Hemp Cord 0.55mm Ruby 10lb 4x12.8m

And no, not your thinking! Hemp threads are made from a natural, bio-degradable material and naturally coloured - perfect for the conscious environmentally friendly creator. A perfect alternative to synthetic cords, hemp cords are perfect for the designer with heaver beads made of wood or bone/horn, as the thread is closely knit woven piece which extremely durable and supple meaning your creations will last countless years. As said before, they come in a variety of natural colours and tones and their cords are perfect for macrame for firm and attractive knotted creations. Hemp is especially good at keeping it's overall shape and form when finished due to its natural material.

Just be careful when weaving or threading this material, too much fiddling can loosen the fibres slightly and give the thread almost furry design with some stray fibres - however that does add some texture to the piece (you can play around with the material and see if you prefer the smooth or the slightly rougher finish). The finishes for the bracelet are slightly limited as well due to material weave not allowing additional metal findings to be attached but more natural ones such as a loop and bead, knots or sliding knot would suffice

Nozue Sonoko Thread

Nozue Sonoko Nylon Beading Thread 0.2mm White 100 Metre

Created by a Japanese company, this 100% nylon thread slightly different from others as the thread isn't created from twisted fibers which prevents fraying and splits when threading. Nozue was specifically made for the beading industry, with its characteristic thin thread, ease to put it through needles and can be easily cur or burned with a threading burner.

Nozue Sonoko thread is the perfect thread for off loom projects and beading projects as, like Fireline or Cotton, this thread isn't overly stretchy but can be pliable and forgiving the weaving process. For bracelets or bangles this is perfect, as you can pull the threaded piece over your wrist comfortably for it to retain into the desired shape without sagging or overly stretched finish. The beader or weaver need to keep a close eye when using this thread, it's isn't as strong as the Fireline threads and will snap if forced too much.

Polyester

Turquoise Blue Waxed Polyester Jewellery Cord Thread 1m

Ideal for Macrame knotting and in the creation of Shamballa bracelets, polyester cord is a supple and sturdy beading thread which is straight forward to manipulate, knot and weave. Being a slightly thicker and wider thread then others, the polyester thread allows a better grip on the material for threading and knotting but also painless to thread the larger holed beads through. It's also less likely to thread and fray with use compared to other materials. (Just imagine this thread doing the same as a shoe lace - you can easily thread it and complicated or simple knots) However this thread is not elasticated or mailable so ensure that the length cut will allow you to thread your design - otherwise you might caught a little short!

For small tutorial on weaving using polyester cord, we have one here created by Emma for some easy inspiration.

Pearl Bead Cord

Griffin Silk Pearl Beading Cord 0.6mm (No.6) White 2m

This cord does exactly what it says on the tin.. well packet. This ultra fine thread give a professional finish to any project as it's delicate nature comes from it's creation of natural silk, a lightweight but tactile material. This bead is the perfect thread for freshwater or cultured pearl beads as the fine thread prevents any abrasions or discolouring to happen to the beads  compared to others meaning that it's perfect for weaving pearls into necklaces or earrings. One note is that for complicated knotting or beading, you may require additional tools in order to get a tight and strong knot or weave into the cord,  so take a look at our range of tools for more help.

Rattail

Kumihimo Satin Rattail Cord 1mm Chino 4 Colours 12yds

Similar to the Chinese cord described above, this thread is slightly thicker then standard threads, but have a slight sheen to them for an attractive tape on any work which has any exposed beading thread in them. These make a great cord to use for Kumihimo beading and larger beading threads as well. They come in a range of assorted colours - from brighter tones of blues and reds to more demure and delicate tones of light pinks and pastel colours. Rattails are easy for beginner beaders due to them not needing clasps or cord ends but can be tied together in a simple square or sliding knot depending on the finished items owner. This allows the beads to stay closely together on the thread but allows you to tighten the knot depending on the spaces between the beads, length of the piece or neck size.

Silk String

Silk Fabric Strings 2mm Hand Dyed Rose Pink 1 Metre

Created and woven from pure sewn silk, silk string is perfect for brightening up string beads, charms and pendants with its deep bold colours and smooth finish. (We currently have 15 different colours available here meaning you will definitely find the right colour to match or compliment your beads!) These silk strings are perfect for Chinese Knotting, macrame and braiding due it easy grip, smooth finish and flexible design to allow you to twist and shape into desired designs or knots. If your not able to get your hands on some pearl bead cord for your pearls (cultured, freshwater etc) then silk string is a perfect alternative as it's natural material won't interfere with the pearls natural sheen and still gives a fantastic finish to your beaded pearls. You can also use them to create some fantastic Boho inspired jewellery for some design flair - with its use of colour and drop lines, the silk string is perfect as it's bold colours compliment the coloured beads and metal findings for these Boho creations. These strings can also be simply tied together to create your finished piece or browse through cord endings and findings to secure and complete your projects. For example if you wanted to create a stunning  for your other half, why no use black silk string and silver findings for that masculine edge to your bracelet.

Superlon Cords

Beadsmith S-Lon #18 0.5mm Bead Cord Nylon Primary PK4

Superlon (also referred to as a S-Lon cording in some stores) is created from twisting slightly thicker nylon threads together to create a strong and supple beading thread, with a texture and strength similar to rope. The colourful woven thread is visually striking and comes in a huge range of different colours from docile and natural "sea mixes" of blues and greens to neon pinks and yellows for a new spin of your creations. Superlons best use is in micro macrame and Kumihimo beads as the thread when woven together closely can create a clean and smooth edge to your macrame but when threaded, adds a flush of colour to the finished product.  The cord however, similar to Polyester cords, has virtually no stretch or elasticity to it,  meaning that you may need to cut the thread slightly larger to keep in mind any additional elements you wish to add to your designs, such as sliding knots, findings etc as you may find yourself running low on thread length!

Soutache Cord

Beadsmith Soutache Polyester Cord 3mm Wide - Marine 3yd

Lastly (but definately not least!) is Soutache cord. Soutache, due to it's narrow and flat thread, is perfect for creating custom trimming designs and drapery, as the when woven the flat braid creates a smooth and complete design. Traditionally, Soutache cords are woven from a variety of natural materials such as metallic bullion thread, silk or a silk and wool blend to create a silky and even peice but also available is a vareity of semi-natural threads for a brighter and more textured finish to your product - perfect for that touch of shining glamour to your designs. To use this thread effectively, Soutaches are usually interwoven with beads embedded into them to create added dimension and character to a typically flat weave - perfect for embellishments on clothes, dress and much more!

So thats a run down on all the threads available on Beads Jar and I hope it gives a little more information for all the crafters! As I said before if you want to comment on your experiences any of the threads or cord, or want to show us some of your creations using these cords you can find us on Facebook and Twitter. We will soon be opening an Instagram account and will be replying to others creations on that so stay tuned!

Until next time!
