Hi everyone! I've created a little mini tutorial this week taking you through the steps of basic square stitch by following these easy steps. This stitch gives you a solid block of beading and works wonderfully with square, cube and Delica Seed beads.
It builds up really quickly when you use larger seed beads so you'll be whipping up Bracelets or other beaded projects in no time.
Thread your needle and secure a stop bead onto the thread to prevent your beads falling off the thread. Then thread on however many beads you would like the width of your design to be (I've used four size 8/0's here).

Step 2
Now pick up another bead with your needle and move it down your thread. Take the needle back through last bead on your row so this bead sits on top of it.

Step 3
Go back through the first bead on this second row, ready to thread on another bead.

Step 4
Pick up another bead and take the thread back through the second bead on the first row, positioning it next to the previous bead.

Step 5
Then take the needle back through the bead you just positioned.

Step 6
Thread on another bead and take the needle back through the third bead, position the bead next to the previous two.

Step 7
Bring the thread back through the third bead.

Step 8
Finally, pick up one more bead on your thread and take the needle back through the fourth bead on the first row.

Step 9
When the bead is in position, bring the thread back through this bead as before to complete the row.

Step 10
Keep repeating this pattern until you have the length you require. Easy peasy right? :D

If you're new to seed beading and want to get to grips with a few of the basic stitches, be sure to head over to our Seed Bead Guides where you will find more information on seed bead types and more illustrated step by step tutorials. You can also find this square stitch tutorial with added steps; going through the third row.
Until next time,
