How to make a Peyote stitch bezel for Swarovski Chatons

This tutorial shows you how to create a peyote stitch bezel for your pointed back Swarovski Crystal Chatons and Rivolis using Size 11 Miyuki Delicas and Size 15 Miyuki Rounds. Size 11 round beads can also be used instead, but I find that Delicas are perfect for this as their cylinder Shape allows them to sit together perfectly. A 10mm Swarovski Crystal Chaton has been used here however the same technique can be used for a 10mm Rivoli. You can also experiment with adding more or less beads for different sized Chatons.

Materials used in this guide:

Size 11 Miyuki Delica Seed beads
Size 15 Miyuki Round Seed Beads
6lb Beadsmith Fireline beading thread
Size 10 Beading Needle
1 x 10mm Swarovski Xirius Chaton Shade: Clear Crystal

Step 1

Cut a 30" length of Fireline beading thread, thread your needle onto one side, then pick up 26 x Size 11 Miyuki Delica seed beads. Move them down your thread until you have a 6" tail.

Step 2

Now take your needle back through all the seed beads and pull tight. This will create a circle and reinforce your first row of peyote. Tie a knot when you've pulled tight.

Step 3

Take the needle through the first Delica bead next to your knot.

Step 4

Pick up another Delica bead, miss a bead on your first row and take your needle through the next Delica.

Step 5

Pick up another Delica, miss a bead on the circle and take the needle through the next Delica.

Step 6

Pick up another Delica, miss a bead on your circle and take the needle through the next Delica. You should start to see the peyote pattern emerging now.

Step 7

Carry on like this until you get all the way around the circle.

Step 8

Now you're going to 'step up'. To do this, take your needle through the next Delica on your first row (on the inside).

Step 9

Now pick up a size 11 round seed bead, then take the needle through the next Delica bead on the inside row. The round bead should sit neatly between the two Delicas. Make sure you keep a good tension on your thread so everything's nice and tight.

Step 10

Pick up another round bead and take the needle through the next Delica.

Step 11

Repeat step 10...

Step 12

Carry on with this until you complete the circle. Once you get all the way around you're going to step up again. To do this, take the needle through the first Size 11 round bead on the row you just completed.

Step 13

Pick up a Size 11 round and take the needle through the next round bead on the first row.

Step 14

Repeat Step 13...

Step 15

Carry on with this pattern until you complete another row. The beads on this row should sit between the rounds on the previous row. Again, make sure you are pulling nice and tight with your thread to prevent your bezel becoming misshapen. You have now completed the top of your bezel!

Step 16

Now turn it over and weave your thread through to other size, coming out of a Delica on the outside.

Step 17

We're now going to repeat what we did on the other side with the last two rows of rounds. So...pick up another size 11 round seed bead then take the needle through the next Delica on this row.

Step 18

Pick up another round then take the needle through the next Delica...

Step 19

Carry on until you complete the row. It's really important that you make sure you're pulling tight at this point as this is what's going to encase the Chaton. Once the first row of rounds is complete, position the Chaton in the centre, sparkly side down. Try and get it as centred as possible as once we've completed the next row you won't be able to re-position it.

Step 20

Step up again by going through the first round bead on the previous row. Pick up another round then take the needle through the next round bead on the previous row, just like you did on the front side of the bezel. Keep pulling tight and make sure your Chaton is still centred.

Step 21

Carry on until you complete the row, making sure the Chaton is still in the right position as you go. When you reach the end, pull nice and tight, then tie off your thread by creating a half hitch knot. To do this, take your needle under a line of thread between two beads, pull the thread through stopping when you have a loop, then take the needle through the loop before pulling tight. Repeat this a couple of times until your thread is sufficiently secure, then either cut off the excess or use it to embellish the bezel with more beads or to stitch down onto a base. Thread a needle onto the 6" tail you left at the beginning and repeat the half hitch knot to secure the thread.
